How Can a Painful Lump In The Knee Be Treated?

I fell and injured my right shin two months ago. I didn t go to a doctor (lost health insurance) and it didn t seem bad enough either. Large area of bruising healed up no problem. However, one spot remained extremely tender and is indented (deeper tissue damage?) - it s about the size of a quarter, 3 inches under my right knee and just to the left of my shin bone. It is still tender, but not as much. For the past couple of weeks, however, I ve noticed a bump to the right of the dent, the bump being centered on my shin bone. So I have a few questions - first, is it possible to dent a bone without fracturing it or is it likely to have micro fractures? Is it possible to fracture your tibia and still walk normally without any abnormal pain? When healing after a impact injury, is a bone creating new tissue that could form a bump? A bone spur (not sure exactly what one is) or calcification build up? And lastly - is it possible that lingering effects of this small injury will occur? Including something more serious? Thank you so much!!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
indent formation during healing of wound is seen sometimes and the indent should be gone or become completely pain free over the next 3-4 months as complete gaining of strength of tissue requires around 6 months. denting a bone without fracturing it quite uncommon in long bones like shin bone ( can be seen in skull bone). there might be a chance of micro fracturing in bone due to trauma which should resolve with rest and time. the bump that you have should be examined more carefully. if that bump is soft & mobile with skin then it can be soft tissue swelling requiring nothing much except observation. but if it's hard immobile fixed to deep tissues then it should be taken care of. an x ray can be done . nothing much to worry now just see to get an x ray done. report back with outcome. get well soon
